Netiqutte: the importance of hearing each other

Today we're going to talk about the netiquette and one of the ten commandments published by Virginia Shea.

        About Netiquette

The Netiquette is a net etiquette. In other words, it the rules for polite online communication. That rules is needed for keeping toxicity away when people communicate over the Internet. Another reason for that is to hear your partner. In case you listening for your partner, the partner themselves begin to listen.

    Ten commandments

Virginia Shea published a book named the Netiquette in 1995 where she proposed ten commandments on how everyone on the Internet should talk.

Those commandments were:

  1. Remember the human
  2. Adhere to the same standards of behavior online that you follow in real life
  3. Know where you are in cyberspace
  4. Respect other people's time and bandwidth
  5. Make yourself look good online
  6. Share expert knowledge
  7. Help keep flame wars under control
  8. Respect other people's privacy
  9. Don't abuse your power
  10. Be forgiving of other people's mistakes

But today we're focus on the second commandment.


        Adhere to the same standards of behavior online that you follow in real life

The communication over the Internet doesn't mean that you should lean to more aggressive behavior, even if you can't see people you are communicating with. 

Some people become more toxic because they knew that the person, they are talking with isn't know much about them. So, they could easily change their behavior because others don't know their real behavior and background. They could easily change their identity if they feel treated after the words they spoke.

Also, some people tend to use less polite forms of words in order to express themselves. Also, because they are on the Internet, they are thinking that they simply could disconnect of block the user they are talking with if the communication between them start to become hostile. And because that convenient way of leaving dialogue is very easy, people tend to be more relaxed and less filter what they are saying.

    Example

Person A could easily say mean things to person B when they are communicating over the Internet. They both didn't see each other and in case the person B won't like their speech, the person A could simply block and forget about person B.

    Personal experience

I once knew a guy who wanted to make angry everyone he is talking with. He was trying to support the opposite things that the person he is talking with likes. So, you can easily say that he was an Internet troll. In case, someone threatens him he just says something like "no u :P" and then blocks the opponent. In case someone, was perseverant enough to bypass his numerous blocks, he simply deletes his account and creates another.


Conclusion

We now know that the netiquette is important for us while we are communicating in the web. It is mostly needed to hear everyone and make the Internet a civilized place. We also talked why we tend to be less polite while talking with strangers over the Internet.
