Security situation in Estonia's cyberspace
Today we are going to analyze the overall security situation in IT industry in Estonia.
We will be using the Kevin Mitnick's formula where the security is divided into three groups:
- Technology
- Training
- Policy
Technology
The first group is the technology. That group is about overall security measures with antiviruses, firewall configuration and network security. It is the most basic things cybersecurity specialists deal with and it is the first thing what comes to mind when you trying to secure your network. So, to many slap an antivirus will do the trick. However, when it comes to companies, it is needed to be more secure. So, they probably will hire IT specialist to maintain it.
As for the situation in Estonia, there is plenty of common practices the companies and home users do, to secure it. However, because of the pandemic the number of attacks has been increased since 2020 (data is from 2021). Because of that, the companies became more cautious and steadily upgraded their security software. Also, the need for cybersecurity specialists has risen since then.
Training
Another important group in every secure network is training. Even if you make the most secure system in the world, if any unexperienced user is using it, then it will be hacked eventually. This is because human could easily be manipulated with, and the unexperienced ones are even more prone to it. So, you still need to train your employees or your family members, who seen like they are booting personal computer for the first time (however they aren't), to be more careful and less naive when using any device that is connected to the Internet.
In Estonia, there is a lot of programs out there to educate citizens, to be more cautious when using the Internet. Also, in almost every mediocre company there is at least one cybersecurity specialists, who have the responsibility to train employees and watch over how careful they are, by for example sending out fake fishing messages.
Policy
The last group is policy. It is easier to maintain security if there is common standards and practices for them. And because it is easier, it means there will be less things every user is needed to check before starting their system. Thus, the amount of security holes will be much smaller. We also could implement procedures to automate some security checks.
In Estonia, those practices are usually enforced by IT specialists or geeks. So, in every company and in every family, there is probably will be one guy who knows those security standards and is using them behind the scenes to keep the whole thing secure.
Conclusion
Those were three main security groups and how they are implemented in Estonia. As we can see, the overall security in cyberspace in Estonia is in good condition.
